Ocean Acidification-class syllabus

The oceans cover over two-thirds of the Earth’s surface. They play a vital role in global biogeochemical cycles, contribute enormously to the planet’s biodiversity and provide a livelihood for millions of people. However, most carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere will eventually be absorbed by the ocean, with potentially adverse consequences for marine biota. Indeed, the oceans have taken up about one third of the total carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere by human activities over the past 200 years. This addition of CO2 to the surface ocean changes seawater chemistry, resulting in a decrease in pH and carbonate ion concentration, and an increase in the concentrations of bicarbonate ion and hydrogen ion. Ocean absorption of anthropogenic CO2 also reduces the saturation state of seawater with respect to calcite and aragonite, two common types of calcium carbonate secreted by marine biota. For instance, today’s surface ocean is saturated with respect to calcium carbonate, but increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations are reducing ocean pH and carbonate ion concentrations, and thus the level of calcium carbonate saturation. Experimental evidence suggests that if these trends continue, key marine organisms, such as corals and some plankton, will have difficulty maintaining their external calcium carbonate skeletons. Estimates of future atmospheric and oceanic CO2 concentrations, based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) CO2 emission scenarios and general circulation models, indicate that atmospheric CO2 concentrations could exceed 500 ppm by the middle of this century, and 800 ppm near the end of the century. This increase would result in a decrease in surface-water pH of ~0.4 by the end of the century, and a corresponding 50% decrease in carbonate ion concentration. Such rapid changes are likely to negatively affect marine ecosystems, seriously jeopardizing the multifaceted economies that currently depend on them.

Thus, it is the purpose of this class to address the critical importance of the ocean acidification in modern ocean science study. Students in this class will be assigned to read about 10 key papers from the literature and asked to be prepared to participate in discussion of contents included in these papers. The following topics will be thoroughly examined: (1) ocean acidification is underway and is already detectable; (2) ocean acidification is accelerating and severe damages are imminent; (3) ocean acidification will have socioeconomic impacts; (4) ocean acidification is rapid, but recovery will be slow; and (5) Ocean acidification can be controlled only by limiting future atmospheric CO2 levels.
