Abstract:
Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) represents the largest organic carbon reservoir in ocean, which plays a crucial role in mediating climate on both short and long timescales, the oceanic microbial food web, and oceanic carbon cycling. The contribution of DOC has been estimated up to 20% of total carbon exported from the surface ocean to the depths globally, which was always inaccurate and underestimated. Mesoscale eddies, ubiquitous in the oceans, have been estimated that eddy-induced carbon export invoked to balance the global ocean carbon cycle. Especially in oligotrophic oceans, eddy-pumping could modulate horizontal and vertical nutrient fluxes into the euphotic zone, which significantly enhance primary production and biological activity. We have surveyed one cyclonic eddy in the oligotrophic northern Pacific subtropical gyre. A multi-platform sampling strategy was used to investigate dissolved organic matter in this eddy. Our work mainly discusses the role that such eddies appear to play in the transport of DOM, and some of the implications that this transport can have on the carbon budget and maintenance of the euphotic zone. Based on the high spatial and temporal resolution survey, we try to describe a three-dimensional structure of DOM in the mesoscale eddy. Furthermore, amino acids as the biomarker were analyzing for improving our understanding and quantification of the ocean’s biological carbon pump.
